Good news: Your property taxes might be going down

Finally, there is some good news for folks who bought Marin real estate in the last five or six years. You could see your property taxes go down without having to do a thing, depending upon where they live.

Just in case, it's a good idea to check your assessed value and compare it to comps in your area.  If you are having trouble with this, or would like assistance, let me know and I would be happy to help. July 1 marks the beginning of the appeal period for formal assessment review for fiscal year 2009-10 by the county Assessment Appeals Board. The filing period runs through Nov. 30.

Here is a look at how the number of reassessments are stacking up for Marin County:

2007-08: 475

2008-09: 3,000

2009-10: 12,000 (projected to date)

For more questions about reassessments, call Assessor-Recorder Joan Thayer at 499-7215, or go to Room 208 of the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
